ANNOUNCING THE ORGANIZATION OF THE LOGANSPORT HISTORICAL SOCIETY

FIRST MEETING OF LOGANSPORT HISTORICAL AND GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY




The DEPS of Logansport History –
Announcing the Logansport Historical and Genealogical Society

            Discovering, Exploring, Preserving, and Sharing are the objectives of the initiative to create the Logansport Historical and Genealogical Society (LHGS).  All of those with an interest in the history or people of the border region of western DeSoto Parish and the area surrounding the Town of Logansport are encouraged to contact Frances Jackson Freeman at 318 (347) 8318 or francesfreeman7@me.com

The first public meeting will be held on Jan. 21, at the Logansport Public Library.  The public is invited to gather at 4:00 for refreshments and socialization.  The program, which begins at 4:30, will review THE HISTORY OF LOGANSPORT HIGH SCHOOL as recorded in the memoirs of Mr. Will Price.  This story of the roots of public education in western DeSoto Parish will be presented by Mr. Will’s granddaughter, and noted Louisiana educator, Ms. Mary Mac Thompson.   The program will end before 5:30, but those who wish to participate in the future of the LHGS are invited to remain for further discussions.

            The second meeting will be held on Feb. 18, with the same location and times. Other programs planned for 2014 include: The Story of the Rosenwald Schools with emphasis on the History of Logansport Rosenwald; The History Trunk – How we can use historical artifacts to help children understand the past; Ancestor Hunting In DeSoto Parish – with emphasis on collections, materials, experts, and tools available locally; The History of Football in Logansport by Tim Wheless; Oral History in the Digital Age – Preserving and Sharing Our Memories through digital recordings; The Ghosts of River City; and The History of Logansport, a Documentary Project.

            Membership in the Logansport Historical and Genealogical Society will be $15 per year for the local society or $20 per year for joint membership in the LHGS and the DeSoto Parish Historical and Genealogical Society.  The officers and bylaws of the LHGS will be determined by the will of those who become charter members.
